I Recently Bought a Home. Do I Need a “Certified Copy” of My Deed?

Once the deed is recorded for your new home, your name and your new address are a matter of public record. If you've recently purchased a home and a few weeks after closing some variation of a "records services" company sends you a letter offering to get you a certified copy of your deed for a "nominal" fee, DO NOT DO IT. It is a scam. You will receive the original deed either directly from the county or from your attorney a few weeks after closing, and there's no need for the certified copy. If, for whatever reason, you do misplace the original deed, a copy can be obtained for a fee directly from the county. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions about this or any other real estate matters.
